Many artists have turned to the laborer as signifier for the working class. Accomplishment, solace and satisfaction; the trajectory of effort through engagement, exhaustion and renewal is itself one layer of the narrative. The concerns of this body of work have evolved over time. Each is a reflection on the human condition - which I take to be: mortals in search of meaning and purpose while doing chores and trying to pay their bills. This work is about history and memory; forces and influences that are as invisible as the wind - seen only in the power of their effect. The trajectory of human effort and exhaustion– from the spark of an idea to the engagement of physical production to completion – is mirrored in routine tasks like mowing the lawn or doing the laundry.
I consider these drawings and paintings to be non-linear symbolic narratives; marginalia in a generational history; verses in a folksong.
